A SMALL TROOP OF MONKEYS LIVES IN DESIGN HOTEL VAAKUNA
Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna is full of wonderful details. In the sixth floor lobby of this functionalist hotel, you can meet a small and charming troop of monkeys, living on ceramic reliefs on the wall.
The reliefs are the products of Russian-born Michael Schilkin who worked in the arts department of the Arabia factory between 1935 and 1962. He specialised in small sculptures of animals, masterfully reproducing their movements and forms. At Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, the cheerful monkeys are accompanied by adventurous and kind bears. Schilkin's larger ceramic reliefs can be seen, for example, on the walls of the Aalto University School of Business and Arabia factories.
The sixth floor lobby also opens up towards the busy Sokos and Marks & Spencer department stores.
