Sustainable tourism is the starting point for the design
The Northern Karelia Cooperative Society (PKO) begins the construction of a new hotel in Koli village. The hotel will form part of Break Sokos Hotel Koli, located atop Ukko-Koli. The new four-storey hotel, which will open in 2023, consists of 130 hotel rooms, a casually stylish restaurant, a top floor sauna and two retail premises. The hotel will offer parking and 10 electric vehicle charging points.
Sustainable tourism as starting point
In recent years both Koli National Park and the entire Koli region have secured their positions among the country's most attractive tourist destinations. Koli's only hotel, Break Sokos Hotel Koli, runs at almost 100% occupancy throughout the year.
"The area's accommodation capacity has lately not been able to match the demand. Construction atop Ukko-Koli has, from a sustainable tourism perspective, not been an option, as the nature in the national park is to be protected in every possible way. With the new-build, we are now also directing travelers to Koli village. At the same time, we will be able to offer more guests accommodation next to the magnificent national park," says Tiina Kanninen, Divisional Director, Tourism and Sales at the Northern Karelia Cooperative Society.
"We will continue to develop the tourism in the area from a sustainable tourism perspective together with Metsähallitus, the City of Lieksa, the Municipality of Juua and Kolin Matkailu Oy," Kanninen says. The new part of the hotel will have its own geo-installed solar power plant and run on geothermal energy. The interior will feature natural materials, inspired by Koli's surroundings and seasons.
The village hotel will be the choice of the active traveler
In the future, Break Sokos Hotel Koli will atop Ukko-Koli consist of a scenic hotel with Superior rooms, scenic restaurants and spas, as well as anew-build with restaurants, saunas and Family rooms. "The new hotel in the village will be especially suitable for families and groups, as well as for all active travelers. The national park's hiking trails can be accessed directly from the hotel yard, and you can rent camping equipment or buy tour packages from the Safari House located in the same building," says Hotel General Manager Pasi Ripatti, Break Sokos Hotel Koli. "The new hotel will also be a destination for occupational well-being groups. Together, the two hotels will offer versatile services for different traveler needs."
The interior design of Koli'snew-build is the work of Schauman Architects from Turku. The construction of the hotel will be carried out by professionals from North Karelia.
Construction is expected to begin in April 2022 and the new hotel will be completed in time for the summer season 2023. Rooms can be booked from the end of 2022.
Break Sokos Hotel Koli has been awarded both the Sustainable Travel Finland and the Green Key symbols for its sustainable operations.
