New village hotel opened in Koli on Midsummer's Eve.
New village hotel to open in Koli on Midsummer's Eve. The last time a hotel opened in the national park was more than 50 years ago.
The new Break Sokos Hotel Koli Kylä will open on Midsummer Eve 2023 in the village of Koli, next to the hiking trails of the national park. The atmosphere of the national park's trails is reflected in the hotel, with an interior inspired by Koli's beautiful seasons. The four-story village hotel has 130 rooms, two restaurants, services of a company which offers guests excursions and equipment rentals, a physiotherapist and a stylish sauna section. The hotel is operated by the North Karelian Cooperative, and the value of the investment exceeds EUR 20 million.
"Opening a new hotel in the national landscape of Koli for the first time in more than 50 years – and in the midst of the most beautiful Finnish summer – is a unique opportunity. Koli's first, and until the opening of the village hotel, only hotel (the current Break Sokos Hotel Koli) opened on the peak of Ukko-Koli in 1970. A tourist lodge existed in the same location since 1893," says Pasi Ripatti, General Manager of Break Sokos Hotel Koli and Break Sokos Hotel Koli Kylä.
"I am convinced that the new village hotel will quickly find its own clientele among active travellers, groups and families," Ripatti adds.
Hearty picnic snacks, family rooms and a rooftop sauna with views to the national park
Each room of the village hotel can accommodate 3–4 people, and there are also rooms connected by a shared hallway. All rooms are equipped with drying cabinets and wall bars suitable for stretching and playing.
The hotel's restaurant Tervaskanto serves hearty dishes ranging from pastas to Lake Pielinen pikeperch and burgers prepared with steak from the local Haukiniemi farm. The café-bar Puronmutka serves pastries and drinks, as well as a selection of picnic lunches. In addition, The Helsinki Distilling Company will open a distillery in the village hotel premises, where drinks flavoured with North Karelian berries will be distilled.
After a full day of excursions, hotel guests can relax in the saunas on the top floor of Break Sokos Hotel Koli Kylä. One of the saunas available for booking is equipped with a balcony with views of the national park and two jacuzzis. The village hotel also hosts a massage-physiotherapist, offering both traditional massage and mobilizing techniques.
The new hotel caters to children in many ways. It has been equipped with multiple playhouses and a climbing wall. The restaurant also serves popular children's dishes.
Sustainability as a core value
Guiding tourists to areas beyond the peaks of Koli supports the sustainability strategy of the Northern Karelia Cooperative Society, which operates the Koli hotels.
The village hotel has 10 parking spaces for electric cars, its own solar power plant with as many as 150 panels and a district heating system. A local North Karelian team has been used in the construction of the hotel, and the products of the area's entrepreneurs are utilized as comprehensively as possible in both the interior design and the restaurant's menu.
"We hope that the guests of the new hotel, if possible, travel on foot from the village to the trails of the national park. The village path is a three-kilometre long route, starting from the centre of Koli village and ending at the lookout point of Ukko-Koli. From Ukko-Koli it is possible to continue on all trails in the national park," says Matti Hovi, Manager, Recreational Amenities at Metsähallitus.
Summer at Koli begins with a week of excursions
During June 26 – July 2 Koli will offer a week of excursions, including an Icelandic horse adventure and river rafting. The new village hotel is located a mere 800 meters from the Koli harbour, where you can cruise Lake Pielinen on board M/S Marival II, four times a day. The on-site company Polar Adventures rents camping equipment and sells ready-made excursion packages, such as children's forest adventures and bike tours.
