Original Sokos Hotel Wiklund Turku towards sustainable tourism!

When the hotel has been awarded these recognition, it indicates that the hotel is committed to working for the environment and regulating its operations in accordance with the well-being of the environment.

"Original Sokos Hotel Wiklund Turku takes Green Key and STF recognition seriously as it motivates our staff and customers to make better choices regarding daily actions. We are committed to reduce our waste, to improve our energy- and water consumption and increase enviromental awarness. Also one of the main criteria when choosing hotel these days is sustainability and we want to do our part for more sustainable future." tells hotel manager Tarja Toivonen.

Did you know?

Some of the hotel rooms have solar protection films, which reduce the cooling power requirement by almost 50%/room. The estimated saving from electricity used for cooling is 10 MWh/year.

Most of the carbon footprint of hotel accommodation consists of breakfast. Food waste is a big problem and in Finland food waste in restaurants is up to 61 million kilos. When you eat from the buffet, remember that you can always get more. You can also help reduce your carbon footprint by choosing vegetarian, vegan and organic products. We monitor the amount of food waste closely and strive to act to prevent waste reduction on a daily basis. Some of our hotels already have bioscales in use. Read more here

Our hotel is heated using 100% renewable district heating. This way we can zero out our emissions in terms of heating energy. And our electricity is also produced with 100% renewable energy.

what we do for more sustainable tourism?

  • Due to our central location, we encourage customers and staff to come to us by public transport, and during the visit many places can be reached from us on foot or with the hotel's loaned bicycles, for example!
  • We constantly strive to reduce paper consumption. Would you like to have your receipt on your email rather than paper one?
  • We sort the waste. In the hotel's 3rd floor workspace, customers also have their own recycling point!
  • We save energy e.g. Our Wihta sauna is only warm for 4 hours/day
  • We save water e.g. by regulating water flows in rooms and common areas.
  • At breakfast, warm sandwiches from the previous day's waste are served.
  • We also have leftover buffet for pets!
  • We also offer vegetarian options on the restaurant's menu.
  • We use eco-labeled detergents for room cleaning. We also do not automatically clean the rooms of those staying for longer periods of time every day, but our guests can determine the need for cleaning themselves.
  • We also encourage children to travel responsibly by giving them an Onni Orava-environmental pass when checking in.
  • We are a Finnish hotel in heart of Turku!

Our Sustainability goals for 2024:

  • Mobile- key to our rooms.
  • enhancing and enabling recycling
  • Reduce (food)waste
  • increasing locality

What you can do?

  • Arrive with public transport or if you arrive with your own car, keep it in our parking spaces, you won't need it here, everything is so close! (or easier to visit by foot or buss)
  • Ask the room to be cleaned only when it is really necessary. You can, for example, just ask for the garbage to be emptied if you feel, for example, that the towels are still usable.
  • Drink tap water. Finland has extremely fresh and good tap water that you can drink, so don't buy bottled water.
  • Do not use disposable containers
  • Recycle! There are sorting instructions in the rooms, but if you want a more versatile recycling option, take a look at the Co-work sorting point on the 3rd floor. The reception can also recycle items for you if you can't find a suitable container.
  • Take only as much as you can eat on your plate. You can apply for more! The amount of plate waste at hotel breakfasts is huge. A bioscale is already in use at some of our locations. Bioscale tells to customers how much there has been plate waste within a week as how many portions has gone to waste.
  • By choosing a Green Key - certified hotel, you support sustainable tourism. You can also leave us feedback if you noticed something that needs to be improved or if you have good ideas for increasing responsibility!
