Panoramic restaurant Loiste to get a makeover during the spring
Restaurant Loiste and its conference and sauna facilities, located on the top floor of Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, will be closed on 2 January 2020 for refurbishment. The restaurant as well as the conference and sauna facilities will reopen in the spring with a brand new look. The panoramic restaurant will be transformed into a meeting place for all Helsinki residents by, for example, expanding its views over the city. Following the reopening, the restaurant will continue to be open from morning till evening, with the outdoor terrace offering additional seating in the summer.
Vaakuna's restaurant has one characteristic that distinguishes it from all other restaurants in Helsinki: a stunning view in four directions over Helsinki. "In the revamp, we'll be maximising the enjoyment of the views, meaning that wherever you can see the city in the restaurant, we aim to provide a full view of it to the customers," says Hotel Manager Satu Näsärö. "Sunrises and sunsets are especially wonderful moments here, and in future, they'll be increasingly easy to enjoy. There aren't that many panoramic places like this in Helsinki."
Restaurant Kaarre, which provides a view towards the parliamentary building, has so far operated only as a restaurant open to order. After the reopening, it will be available for all à la carte diners when not reserved for a private function. This will bring an increasing number of panoramic tables into active use.
The conference facilities and sauna over on the side of the Helsinki Railway Square and the Helsinki Cathedral will also be refurbished.
The interior decoration of the restaurant facilities will be updated with respect for the building's unique 1950s spirit. "Paavo Tynell's great lamps will continue to light the dining room and the clarity and curved shapes characteristic of the Nordic funkis style will be preserved," says Näsärö.
During the refurbishment, the breakfast of hotel guests will be served in the street-level restaurant Casa Largo. Coffee House, Fafa's and Casa Largo will also be serving hotel guests during all other hours for the duration of the work.
Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna and its restaurants are operated by Sokotel Oy. Interior Architects Fyra are responsible for the new interior decoration.

The Sokos-Vaakuna building was designed by the well-known Nordic funkis architect Erkki Huttunen. The restaurants were opened in 1947, the hotel in 1952. In addition to the beautiful 1950s expression of form, Restaurant Loiste's unique features include its original furniture and objects as well as the view over Helsinki opening up from the restaurant.
