Original Sokos Hotel Kimmel by river Pielisjoki has gone through extensive renovations which are nearly completed. The first stage of the renovation is finished and the guests can check into the renewed rooms during at the last weekend of July. The biggest event house in Eastern Finland is going through renovations to offer modern-day Karelian luxury in its new hotel, restaurant and event spaces in the future.
The new Standard rooms, breaksfast room and BistroBar are in use starting on the 30th of July. The brand new Superior rooms and suites, Bistro Heili, evening restaurant Las Palmas and the hotel's new meeting spaces open on the 16th of September. Sirkkala ballroom is finished in October. All the spaces can be already booked.
Interior and architect company Puroplan & Jaakko Puro Oy is known for its work on Finland's most stunning hotels and it is responsible for the design and architectual work of Kimmel. The heavy use of natural materials, strong colours and local design objects bring the North Karelian nature and culture as a part of the hotel experience. The rooms have ecological wood products done by Kolo Design from Joensuu and you can enjoy local products in the restaurant from Kontiomehu and brewery Honkavuori. The brightness of the meeting and restaurant spaces is added by opening up the spaces towards the surrounding nature and views.
Hotel sales have started well
"The hotel is filled with festival guests from Sirkkala Pop Fest and Lauri Tähkä's stadion concert guests during the opening weekend. The festival season continues with Rock in the City -event on the 6th and 7th of August. Business travelling season starting on mid August is looking good but there's still room for more", says Kaija-Riitta Uusitalo, the General Manager of Original Sokos Hotel Kimmel.
"Both the staff as well as our loyal customers have been eagerly waiting for the opening of the hotel. The end result will be a fantastic combinaton of local work, innovative Finnish design, North Karelian nature and the arts and crafts of local craftsmen. It is lovely to partly open our renovated hotel", Uusitalo says.
The total cost of the hotel renovations are around 19 million euros and the impact on employability is 323 man-years.
