Coming soon: Oulu2026

Oulu is the European Capital of Culture 2026 – and we at Original Sokos Hotel Arina are proud to be part of it!
The European Capital of Culture year is a great opportunity for us as a hotel to create experiences that delight locals and visitors. We’ve developed a rich program for 2026, starting with the Abstract Sensory Journey – part of the official Oulu2026 program.
Oulu's happiness inspires Art
The Abstract Sensory Journey invites you to experience what happiness in Oulu looks like, feels like, and sounds like. At the heart of the artwork is the Wall of Happiness, which brings together responses from over 1,400 people of Oulu to the question: “What makes you happy?” These answers have inspired an art route that spreads throughout the hotel’s spaces, making visible the sources of happiness through a dialogue between everyday life and art.
The sources of happiness were collected through a geographically targeted social media campaign in Oulu. By keeping participation easy and accessible, the goal was to maximize the number of responses. Thanks to the large volume, clear patterns emerged.
The responses revealed recurring themes: happiness often springs from small moments, close relationships, nature, and peace. Many mentioned shared family time, unhurried mornings, or spending time outdoors. These recurring themes form the emotional core of the artwork and have guided its visual and multi-sensory design.
“Our most important mission is to create happiness – to offer small and big experiences for our guests. The Abstract Sensory Journey is an opportunity for us to make this visible through art and, at the same time, contribute to building the Oulu2026 cultural year,” says Päivi Kaarlela, General Manager of Original Sokos Hotel Arina.
Behind Oulu-based KaikuArt are mother and daughter, Sanna Anttonen and Inka Leskinen. Their collaboration began with a desire to bring more emotion and meaning into homes through art. Now, that same idea expands into a communal art experience where happiness becomes visible and shared.
“When you recognize your own sources of happiness, you can also increase them in your life. That’s why we find creating the Abstract Sensory Journey especially meaningful,” explains artist Sanna Anttonen.
The artwork is based on the idea that happiness is not one big moment but many small things. Each piece invites reflection on what builds your own happiness and how you could bring it closer to everyday life.
The experience will continue to evolve in the lead-up to the Capital of Culture year, with new elements such as sound, music, and future installations to be added.
The installation will be open at Original Sokos Hotel Arina – not only for hotel and meeting guests, but for anyone eager to explore the art of happiness in Oulu.
Experience the Art Already – and Watch It Grow Toward 2026
The Abstract Sensory Journey is already available at Original Sokos Hotel Arina, and it will continue to evolve and expand as we approach the European Capital of Culture year in 2026.
Enjoy a unique art experience during your hotel stay – and let your thoughts soar after a day’s work!
The Abstract Sensory Journey is a self-guided art trail designed for our guests. Participants explore six specially selected abstract artworks by KaikuArt, placed stylishly throughout the hotel. Each piece invites you to reflect on its atmosphere, discover how it resonates with your own life, and optionally complete a short reflection task.
You can pick up the art trail materials at our reception, and once completed, you’re welcome to collect a small delightful reward from us!
