Ärjänsaari
Ärjänsaari, the pearl of Lake Oulujärvi. Spend a summer day in stunning scenery enjoying beach activities or explore the island by hiking the trail that circles around it (approx. 10km). Kajaani Castle Ruins and the Tar Canal
Built in the 17th century, Kajaani Castle Ruins are a popular attraction and one of Kajaani's most famous sights. The area is easily accessible on foot, and you can enter the castle via a bridge.
The Kajaani River Tar Canal is the world's only operational tar canal. The tar boat rowing demonstrations are a popular event where the canal locks are opened and tar boats row through the dams accompanied by accordion music.
In summer 2026, tar boat rowing demonstrations will be held as follows:

Eino Leino House
Eino Leino House is a heritage house in Paltaniemi, Kajaani, built to resemble poet Eino Leino's childhood home. The house features a summer café, a book exhibition, and a photo exhibition about the lives of Eino Leino and Elias Lönnrot. Learn more:
