Sustainability

Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna has been awarded the Green Key certificate and the Sustainable Travel Finland label.
Here at Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna and Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskauppa, we are committed to developing sustainable operations. We take care of nature and you. We also encourage our customers to make healthy and responsible choices.
Responsibility is not a choice for us. It is the basis for our existence. Responsibility guides our everyday choices. We also take care of people. We are committed to non-discrimination, equality and respect for human rights for our customers and staff.
Responsibility strongly affects all of us in Vaakuna, including the hotel, breakfast and our several restaurants. We create responsibility goals together and report on them regularly. Our staff plays an extremely important role in responsibility work. We communicate about what we are doing and encourage sharing of new ideas. Together, we make a better place to live!
What means Green Key certificate?
What means Sustainable Travel Finland label?
At Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, we promote sustainable choices in many ways:
- We use as many organic and local products as possible, such as local meat, fish, vegetables and berries. All porridge flakes are organic. We also use seasonal products from local producers.
- Vegetarian options have been added to breakfast and in our restaurants, and it is now easier to modify dishes to include vegetarian options.
- We actively recycle in every department and have also increased our customers' recycling opportunities, for example adding sorting bins in the hallways.
- We are currently paying extra attention to the amount of food waste.
- For breakfast in room, customers can now choose their favorite products from the selection provided.
- Our hotel rooms have water-saving shower heads.
- For longer stays, we do room cleaning on request.
- At breakfast, we encourage our customers to only put as much on their plate as they can eat at the time.
- We use ResQ application to reduce food waste.
- We use eco-labelled cleaning products.
- We do not offer customers individually packaged products.
- Instead of plastic bottles, we encourage our customers to drink fresh, clean tap water.
- Our staff is regularly trained in sustainability topics.
- We are part of the Travel Proud program and we are doing our best to make travel more equal for LGBTIQ+ travelers. You can come to us as yourself and count on warm and hospitable service.
- We encourage our staff and customers to cycle and use more public transport. Joensuu is easy to get to by train or bus, and you can borrow bicycles and walking poles from our reception. Joensuu is a great city to explore on foot or by bike.
- One of our future goal is to increase the number of local products and active co-operation with local producers.
Better choices are always in place!
