Are you an avid jogger? Ask reception for a map of the great running trails in the surroundings and head out to the picturesque Arboretum or scenic Pyynikki. We also have a doggy map showing the best places to visit with your four-legged friend. Close to the hotel, there is a dog park located next to Ratina stadium. To boost your workout, why not borrow Nordic walking poles from reception, or even a brand-new bicycle that will take you anywhere in Tampere in a jiffy? For the occasional rainy days, the hotel has a gym available to you from morning to night. After a workout, it's great to have a refreshing swim and enjoy the whirlpool bath at Ilves Spa and or relax in the sauna on level G in the hotel.
If you like the idea of a sauna with an authentic lakeside view, ask reception for directions to Tampere's famous saunas Kaupinoja and Rajaportti. Taking a dip in the river at Mältinranta while admiring at the setting of the old Tampella mill is a unique experience.
The famous doughnuts of the Pyynikki observation tower café are favourites of many of our reception staff. Open year-round, the café serves treats whenever you feel like it.
Another must for any gourmet is the Kauppahalli indoor market. It is a great place to spend some time and fill your tummy with local delicacies.
Tampere boasts several cosy cafés, like Amurin Helmi, with its olden-days atmosphere and location in the Amuri Museum of Workers' Housing. Another unique spot is the historic Uittotunneli café in the timber-floating tunnel on Näsijärvi lake. Many cafés serve wonderful waffles, and nothing can top having a cup of coffee at Laukontori or Tammelantori market. Tampere's diverse restaurant scene is certain to cater to all tastes. Our reception staff are happy to tell you about their personal favourites and help you book a table.
FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN:
The top attraction of Tampere is Särkänniemi, which in the summertime offers diversions for the whole family – from morning until night. When staying at Ilves, just get on the street train or bus for the short ride to Särkänniemi. Around the year, the Näsinneula tower in Särkänniemi offers culinary treats as well as spectacular views from the observation platform.
A short distance from the Ilves, a section of Koskipuisto park has been themed for children to spend many enjoyable hours. Sorsapuisto park has a variety of play and game areas and, in summer, there are ducks and geese in enclosures. While the children play in the fairytale setting of Tiitiäisen satupuisto, the adults can admire the lovely view across Näsijärvi lake. Why not bring along a picnic hamper and stay a while longer, before walking down the hill to explore the little shops in atmospheric Tallipiha?
CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT LOVERS:
Tampere is a veritable Mecca of culture, music and entertainment. Numerous theatres operate all year round, and the events at Tampere Hall, the largest conference and cultural centre in Scandinavia, offer a wide range of entertainment. To find the best museums, go to the Visit Tampere website. For instance, spend an unforgettable day at the Museum Centre Vapriikki. Many restaurants have live music, such as Paapan Kapakka next to Ilves, where you can hear live jazz every day.
A wealth of shopping opportunities opens up practically at the feet of Ilves. There is an indoor connection to a Tampere's greatest shopping centre, boasting all of 100 shops. In Kyttälä district, close to the hotel, there are also numerous little shops selling perfect souvenirs from Tampere for you and your family.
