Tom of Finland is a musical written by Tuomas Parkkinen and composed by Jussi Vahvaselkä and Jori Roosberg about Touko Laaksonen, his art, worldview, joy and pride. The premiere is on 3 September 2026 at Verkatehdas Vanaja Hall and it will be produced as a collaboration between Hämeenlinna Theatre and Verkatehdas.

A unique journey to becoming the world's most famous Finnish artist

The musical tells the story of Touko Laaksonen's journey to becoming Tom of Finland. It shows the path of a talented, unique boy from a teacher's family in Kaarina to becoming the world's most famous Finnish artist. A man who drew his fantasies so real and relatable that millions of men found themselves and their sexuality and more: through Tom's drawings they found a reason to open their eyes in the morning. And for the majority, Laaksonen's works opened a curtain to a world that until then had been unknown, in the shadows, even forbidden and punishable. The musical dares to challenge the audience to imagine that Touko Laaksonen and his art have been one of the most powerful forces in promoting tolerance, equality and equity worldwide.

Touko Laaksonen's courage created Tom of Finland, the leatherman and for millions of people the right to breathe and love. The world needs role models.
