History of Vaakuna Pori

Our hotel is located in the heart of Pori, on the very site where the renowned Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela was born. The area has hosted shops and cafés since the early 1900s. In 1939, Satakunnan Osuuskauppa opened Hotel Satakunta here, which also housed the cooperative’s headquarters, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

Hotel Satakunta served guests for 51 years until the new Sokos Hotel Vaakuna opened in 1990. The current name, Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, was adopted in 2014.

The hotel has been expanded and modernized over the years — for example, the region’s first electric sauna was built here in 1947. Restaurant services have always played a central role: the legendary Suurravintola Satakunta has even hosted a Finnish president, and Pori’s first pizzeria opened in the hotel in 1980. Today, the hotel is home to restaurants such as Amarillo and Winston.
