Klaus Ek, Sokos Hotels Tallinn's General manager, recommends
"We moved to Estonia with our family and now live in a peaceful area of Pirita. Each morning I drive to work along a beautiful coastal road towards Tallinn's most legendary landmark - Hotel Viru," says Klaus Ek, the new Sokos Hotels Tallinn's General Manager, who has explored Tallinn more closely for over half a year and has found his favourite places for recreation and shopping.
His absolute favourite is the Rotermann Quarter. The area with historically valuable houses between the port and Hotel Viru is named after Tallinn's most famous tycoon C. A. Rotermann, who founded his merchant court in the quarter in 1829. His factories manufactured construction materials and managed their import and export. Soon a distillery, starch factory, flour mill, noodle factory, wool factory and more were opened here. The long forgotten industrial area has been developed into an attractive city environment where the old and new tastefully meet. Among the impressive architecture, shopping fans can find trendy boutiques and clothes shops (Suitsuply, Bershka, Stradivarius, Springfield, Reede and more). Rotermann enchants with its cosy cafes and high-level restaurants. And your can finish your evening with a movie in the largest cinema in Tallinn.
Klaus does his weekend shopping at the new Balti Station Market in Kalamaja. "The market has completely changed since the reconstruction. Now, it's not a tourist trap but an extremely popular meeting and shopping place for Tallinners". Local vegetables and berries, fruits and farm market, abundant meat and fish hall, bakeries and groceries as well as providers of modern street food are under one roof. There's even a cobbler, a chemist and a gym. A good combination for fast-paced visitors – all can be done in one visit. "Muhu bread is something I always buy – it's delicious with Saaremaa butter," Klaus admits.
Both places are just around the corner from Hotel Viru, so come and see for yourself! Klaus is continuing to discover Tallinn.
