History
You have arrived at the centre point of Finland's history. When the fate of our country has been at stake, Mikkeli has been chosen as its military headquarters.
During the Winter War and the Continuation War, Mannerheim became a familiar figure in Mikkeli. Did you know that this well-known cosmopolitan was particularly taken by our frosty birch trees on freezing winter days?
The memories of the town's headquarters-days live on in the Cross of Liberty and the Marshal's batons pictured in Mikkeli's Coat of Arms.
Mikkeli has changed a lot since the days of Mannerheim. The thriving and beautiful town at the heart of Lake Saimaa has attracted more and more tourist as it has grown. Sokos Hotel Vaakuna was opened because we wanted to welcome every guest with the decorum that they deserve.
Our hotel has welcomed tourists on Porrassalmenkatu since 1995. We wish to offer you the best of Mikkeli and the world, a hint of the past spiced with modern life. The view from the hotel looks over to the town centre with its birch trees, but on the courtyard side, in the southern European-style rooms with their balconies, you may forget that you are in Finland at all. Restaurant Frans & Michelle invites you on a culinary journey to enjoy a rustic French meal.
It is your time to unwind. We are here for you.
